GrossArt. A web site dedicated to bringing you a unique perspective in contemporary art. The word contemporary is here used in its broadest sense; contemporary is loosely defined as "belonging to the same period." The artists shown here are all living artists, producing their artwork now. You will find at GrossArt works that could be considered contemporary in the popular sense of the word, that is 'cutting-edge' or 'pushing the boundaries.' As well as work steeped in more classical traditions, yet addressing contemporary issues via the panoply of tools available to artists. Whatever you might find, we can assure you that it will be of exceptional quality and beauty. By providing this forum, we hope that we will be able to better serve the needs of not only the art viewer, but the artists themselves.

GrossArt offers a level of interaction that is unavailable in the traditional space of gallery, museum or studio. Here you might find not only the works that deserve a place in any world class museum, but also the artworks that led to these masterpieces. GrossArt is a living and constantly evolving organism. This is like visiting a museum or an artists studio over the course of years, not only perusing the works on the wall and the easel, but also digging through the archives. The masterpieces, the forgotten inquiries, the sales and successes, the personal favorites... they are all available at GrossArt. In providing a forum for this type of interaction, we hope that your experience with and appreciation for art will increase significantly and with every visit. Then, when you discover that perfect piece of art, it will be more than just love at first sight. It will be the endpoint of a long journey of investigation, communication and effort, manifesting itself in a beautiful artwork that will compliment perfectly not only your surroundings, but your life itself.

GrossArt is designing a space and working on projects that are specifically meant to expand on the unprecedented era of connectivity in which we live, at the most basic levels and within the broadest scope. Suddenly the tools, styles, techniques, and philosophies that make up the language of contemporary artists, are rapidly becoming open to all. An idea or image produced in Havana can now be immediately shared with an almost infinite number of people in an equally astounding number of places. Suddenly, exchanging ideas with others from Paris (France and/or Texas) to St. Petersburg (Russia and/or Florida) is as easy as communicating with someone in your home town. What this will mean for artistic production remains to be seen. What GrossArt can contribute to this promise is a dedication to expanding this forum…a commitment to making a space where the art viewer and artist alike can browse freely and peruse at length the works of diverse international artists.

What all the artists on GrossArt have in common is that burning desire to communicate their ideas. However, in order for an artist, or artwork, to communicate, often a visual connection must be established. The question then becomes: How can we best present our ideas when the only viewing space and time available to the artist is often exhibitions and studio visits? For the production of art is often a solitary enterprise. The effort of making a piece of art is not as simple as sitting in front of a blank slate and manipulating some pigment. It most often begins with the discovery and development of some significant (or trivial) idea via the insights and talents of the artist. Then there is the myriad of preparations (both mental and physical) before the 'work' begins, then to the final expression of that idea on canvas, metal, wood, et cetera. At this point the artwork might take on an existence of its own, winding its way through the labyrinth of the art markets, looking for a home. Yet this process is ultimately a lonely one, marked by hours spent alone in preparation and hard work. Then after all that, the artist must pick up where they left off…again journeying down that road of discovery and creation, only this time from a slightly different starting point, and a slightly different perspective.

Unfortunately, this isolated (or internal) existence can also typify the typical gallery and/or museum experience for the art viewer. Hushed rooms…Impossibly white walls and bright lights... Ten, twenty, maybe thirty examples of artwork meant to represent years of hard work... Often preposterously inaccessible or obtuse information. If you connect with the artwork, it is more a testament to your tenacity and sensitivity than to any marriage of sensibilities and the inherent power of the art. All in all, this type of experience does not seem to foster a deeper connection to the art itself. At GrossArt you are encouraged to browse through every example of the artists work that we could find (both available and already sold). It is our hope and desire that through this interaction with the artwork that you, the viewer, will be able to appreciate the time, effort, and ideas which are manifest in each and every work of art exhibited here.

At GrossArt we encourage you to browse. To dig through our archives. To ask us the tough questions. So pull up your keyboard, relax and take your time. Enjoy.
